Close to Home at America Burgers

It's not exactly the same, but it will -most- certainly do!

My boyfriend and I love burgers. Coming from Southern California, we are a bit more pampered and privileged with our burger education, which, admittedly has given us high standards. Here in Israel, we know that what we find won’t rival our favorite joint back home, but we’ll be happy to find a close approximation.

Then there’s my pesky allergies coming to the party, always making things just a touch more difficult to contend with too. So while my boyfriend searches for an awesome burger, any place that offers a bun or fries I can eat gets bonus points immediately from me.

With a name like America Burger, we knew we would be trying them eventually, and on a recent Saturday afternoon while wandering, we decided it was time.

The restaurant has an industrial feel, it’s not huge, and is often full later in the day. But for a fairly early lunch (by Israeli standards, it was probably about 12:30) it was nicely quiet and half full.

Our waitress spoke perfect English (always nice for the allergic traveler!), and although I’ve learned how to order things and mumble my way through more and more Hebrew, I still prefer communicating in English when new food is concerned, and so onward we went.

Question 1: Do you have a gluten free bun? Yes.

Question 2: Are your fries made in the same fryer as the onion rings? No, they are made in a separate fryer.

Question 3: Can I get cheese on mine? Of course!

Whaaaaaaaaat! This place hit the trifecta. Safe fries, a burger in a bun I can eat, and my favorite food group, the cheese group. Plus, she asked me the ultimate question – Is Medium okay? YES OF COURSE IT IS! I don’t want no burnt meat patty! Needless to reiterate, but I was stoaked.

My burger came out and was cooked to a perfect medium. The veggies they used were fresh, I liked the “America Mayo” they make, and the grilled onions really made the burger. The fries were also good and nicely crispy. Additionally, they offer Green Beans cooked in Garlic and Lemon in a Wok if you’d like something lighter! Overall, I thought my burger was an 8/10.

However, it definitely should be mentioned that my boyfriend did NOT have the same experience I did. His burger was

cooked to barely rare (and we like rare steaks) and just overall he did not particularly enjoy his. He ordered the “Spicy” burger while I ordered the regular “America” burger with cheese. He, however, did NOT tell me or mention anything at the restaurant, and I wish he had sent it back to be cooked more! If you’re unhappy and you don’t mention it then…well….not much they can do for you then! Oh well.

Despite his lackluster burger, I think this is a great place for the Gluten Free craving a burger. I loved mine, and even though he didn’t love his, my boyfriend and I left feeling the need to shout, ‘Merica!
