Let Us Eat Cake! At Arte Glideria!

Tiramisu? Marco's Cake? Apple Strudel? Why yes, you can eat those flavors here!

Okay, okay- it isn't cake actually. But Arte Glideria features multiple flavors with cake in the name. A terrifying site for the Gluten Free, is there anything I'll be able to eat? But wait..... All their flavors (except for one called Bread and Butter, in the picture above in the lower left corner) are Gluten Free. Of course when the lady behind the counter told me that, I gasped ineloquently, "Why!?"

Let's face it - it's harder to make things taste amazing when you're omitting the gluten. Certainly far from impossible, but it requires a little more knowledge, time and often money. So when I hear that a store has made all of their products GF you can understand my surprise, especially in a city that isn't the hippest about Gluten Free education. Their answer also surprised me: "Because we had a lot of customers requesting it so we just decided to make them all available to everyone!" A lot of people requesting it? Where are all these people?! Does the tiny GF community of Tel Aviv all congregate outside this Ice Cream establishment when I'm not looking? Perhaps a mystery for the ages, but regardless, Arte Glideria is a delicious and safe place for us.

So many flavors to choose from!

I went to Arte Glideria for the first time because they offered a discount for those of us who have a Secret Tel Aviv Card (what is Secret Tel Aviv you ask? Only the best English Resource if you live in TLV! ...but the card is for residents only. I'll put a link at the end!) and it was a close walk from my house. Tel Aviv is more often hot than not, and we have no shortage of sweet frozen treats. I could write about them every day and never be done, which is why I often add things to the map without reviews. But for the truly special places, I know I have to elaborate on them.

Arte Glideria is located on Nahalat Binyamin street in a lovely cobblestoned neighborhood full of old, beautiful (albeit falling apart) buildings. It's one of my favorite places in Tel Aviv, and not to be missed. There is something special about these crumbling facades and the ambiance of the place. It has a quiet vibrancy and slowly but surely things are being renovated. Each Tuesday and Friday Nahalat Binyamin hosts the local artists fair, and it bustles with people looking for handmade treasures to bring home or put in their apartments.

There are so many reasons I love Arte Glideria - first the surface ones of their delicious product, their gluten free availability, and their charming location, the fact that they have free live Jazz outside every Thursday night (oh yeah, they do!) - but it is their commitment to their love of their craft that sets them apart. On their website they even state:

"THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT OUR GELATO

- We don’t use FOOD COLORING, the colors of our gelato flavors are the original ones.For example we don’t add green coloring

to pistachio gelato (which has to be pastel color!)

- We don’t use CHEMICAL EMULSIFIERS, therefore our gelato is less “swollen” with air, and tastier.

- Each flavor has its own BALANCING, which is constantly modified according to the environmental temperature and available ingredients (we DO NOT use industrial products!).

- Even the DECORATIONS are handmade by us, that is why in our showcase you will NOT find flavors inspired by well-known commercial brands, such as cookies or other products."

Doesn't the ice cream to the right make your heart jump a bit? It looks like there's BREAD in there! And there was, and it was Gluten free and it was DELICIOUS!!!

Their chefs and owners were trained in Italy and their love for what they are doing really shines through. They offer a clear allergen chart on their website which covers all their flavors and popular allergens. They choose to make their flavors with corn or rice flour so that those of us with Gluten or Wheat allergies can enjoy too.

So there's not much more I can say other than THANK YOU Arte Glideria! And I'll see you frequently because you have a huge catalogue of flavors I simply must try.
